On To The Next Adventure

To be the hero they deserve

I’ve been told that a lot of young children see their fathers as superheros. While it is true that I would be willing to leap tall buildings in a single bound, or protect him from bad guys, I am even more willing to transform myself into the hero he deserves. Change is the ultimate opportunity for transformation.

Once upon a time, I changed my life by packing up my car and moving across the country to start a new life where I knew absolutely nobody. But stepping out of my comfort zone paid off. Almost a decade later, I have a family who I love very much.

Change is good. Change is your friend. Embrace it. It offers you new opportunities, reveals your strengths, makes you more compassionate, more flexible, and it helps you grow.

Sometimes change is taking one step back in order to take a giant leap forward.

I remember sitting on the floor of Boy Wonder’s walk-in-closet-bedroom when we brought him home from the hospital. I cried for a long time that night. He deserved better than a closet. Bex deserved better than a shoebox of an apartment. We all deserved to be happy. At that place, at that point in time, we were not. I told Bex that I thought we should move before he started kindergarten. She agreed.

That feeling got worse. First Bex left her career. Then my job became even more time consuming than it was before. Rent was rising. Paychecks were not. There was a homeless crisis, earthquakes, local violence, and a slew of other little things that kept adding up. Could we have stayed in our comfort zone and made our lives work? Sure. But we didn’t want to anymore.

Our five year plan happened in two years. Just like a new season of your favorite superhero tv shows, The IncrediDad, IncrediMom, and Boy Wonder have entered the next chapter of our adventures too. Boy Wonder starts daycare on the same day that IncrediMom and I both start our new careers. We live in a new town and a new home. The reality of it hasn’t quite sunk in yet. But there is an electric excitement in the air as we stand at the cusp of something new.

Try a change!

So IncrediFans, there is lots to be done. While we are in the midst of clothes shopping, meal prepping our lunch bags, and unpacking boxes, I wanted to give you a word of encouragement. Have you felt like something in your life is off balance? Have you always wished you tried that one thing but the timing just never seemed right? Wrong. There will never be a right time, only your time. Embrace change, take that risk, make this your time. It worked for us! I bet it will work for you too. Tell us all about your risks, changes, and new adventures in the comments below.
